MANILA, Philippines – Although most moms know that breastfeeding is the best choice for babies, few know that they do not have to supplement breast milk with water, am and even powdered milk.
Thus, the Department of Health (DOH) recently launched “Breastfeeding TSEK: (Tama, Sapat, Eksklusibo),” which hopes to address this lack of information among moms and increase the number of moms who exclusively breastfeeds from birth up to six months.
‘Exclusive breastfeeding’ means that mothers feed the baby nothing else but breast milk-no water, other liquid, infant formula, or food.
Besides the usual information campaign, "Tsek" will also have peer counseling sessions, which will help moms deal with breastfeeding issues as well as debunk myths.
The campaign hopes to create the supportive community that ‘exclusive breastfeeding’ mothers need from family, employers, health care providers, and peers who will serve as their breastfeeding support group.
The DOH acknowledges the role of exclusive breastfeeding in saving children’s lives so that the country can move closer to attain its Millennium Development Goals on child health. The DOH also recognizes the importance of increasing the number of infants who are exclusively breastfed and the tremendous health benefits that breastfed infants enjoy.
The more babies breastfeed, the lower their risk of diarrhea. onPllmnnia. and chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and asthma throughout their lifetimes.
